Also budget for the Life in the UK test (around £50), an approved English test if you're not already exempt, and a separate British passport application once you're naturalised.

Three Ways to Naturalise as a British Citizen

Naturalisation doesn't depend on ancestry or a prior UK link, just one of these three qualifying grounds.

Standard Residence

You were in the UK on day one of the 5-year period, free of immigration time restrictions on the date you apply and for the 12 months before.

  • No more than 450 days' total absence across the 5 years
  • No more than 90 days' absence in the final 12 months
  • Holds ILR, EUSS settled status, or right of abode

Married to a British Citizen

Same principle, shortened to 3 years. You only need to be free of immigration restrictions on the date you apply, not for the 12 months before.

  • Currently married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen
  • No more than 270 days' total absence across the 3 years
  • No more than 90 days' absence in the final 12 months

Crown / Government Service

A narrow route for people serving the UK government abroad who can't meet the residence test, decided case by case.

  • Assessed on quality and length of service, UK connections, rank and loyalty
  • The Home Office normally expects sustained, high-calibre service
  • Evidence from the employing department is required

What the Rules Require

Every naturalisation application is assessed against the same core tests. Here's what each one actually means.

  • Residence Requirement
    Time physically in the UK, free of immigration time restrictions, for the qualifying period that applies to your route.
  • Absence Limits
    450 days total over 5 years (standard) or 270 days over 3 years (spouse route), with no more than 90 days in the final 12 months.
  • Good Character Requirement
    Discretionary and strictly applied. Covers criminal record, financial soundness, immigration compliance, and honesty in past applications.
  • EU Settlement Scheme Evidence
    Holding settled status doesn't by itself prove lawful residence under the old EEA rules. Evidence of work, study or insurance may still be requested.
