British Citizenship by Descent (Parents, Grandparents, Double Descent)
Many Americans are eligible for British citizenship even if they have never lived in the UK. You may have a valid claim if you:
-
- have a parent or grandparent born in the United Kingdom, the British Islands or (before May 1922) all of Ireland
- were born to, adopted by or naturalised through a British parent
- are descended from someone born or resident in a former British colony or protectorate
- were married to a male UK citizen before 1983
- have a parent who served the UK government or armed forces
- fall under one of the long-standing or recently updated registration categories for children
- have a parent or grandparent born in the United Kingdom, the British Islands or (before May 1922) all of Ireland
Naturalisation for Americans Living in the UK
If you already live in the UK or intend to move on a visa that leads to settlement, you may qualify for British citizenship through naturalisation.
You may be eligible if you:
-
-
meet the residence requirements
-
meet the good character and English language requirements
-
hold Indefinite Leave to Remain, permanent residence or settled status
-
The Home Office fee for naturalisation is significant and non-refundable. Passportia's eligibility assessment reduces the risk of refusal and financial loss.
Visa Options for Americans Moving to the UK
If you do not yet qualify for British citizenship, several visas allow you to live, work, study or join family in the UK. Some of these visas provide a pathway to permanent residency and later citizenship.
Skilled Worker Visa (Common Route for US Citizens)
The Skilled Worker Visa requires a job offer from a UK employer that holds a sponsor licence.
Key benefits include:
- eligibility for permanent residency after 5 years
- permission to bring your partner and children
- flexibility to change employers if sponsorship rules are met
This is the most common work route for Americans relocating to the UK.
High Potential Individual Visa (HPI)
You may qualify if you graduated in the last 5 years from a top 50 global university. Many qualifying institutions are in the United States.
Features include:
- no job offer required
- permission to work in the UK
- a 2 year stay, or 3 years for PhD graduates
- permission for your partner and children to accompany you
- the ability to switch to a visa that leads to settlement
This route is attractive for recent graduates and early career professionals.
Global Business Mobility (GBM) Visas
If you are moving to the UK branch of your current employer, you may qualify for one of the GBM categories. These include Senior or Specialist Worker, Graduate Trainee and UK Expansion Worker.
Most GBM categories do not lead directly to permanent residency. However, partners and dependent children can accompany you.
Innovator Founder Visa for Entrepreneurs
This visa is suitable for Americans who have received an endorsement from an approved UK endorsing body.
Advantages include:
- potential permanent residency after 3 years if business criteria are met
- permission for your partner and children to join you

Additional Nationality Situations We Handle
Passportia also assists with the following:
Right of Abode
We can determine whether you hold Right of Abode and whether it supports a claim to British citizenship.
Resumption of Citizenship
If you previously renounced your British citizenship, we can advise on reinstatement options.
Children's Citizenship and Registration
Recent changes to nationality law have expanded eligibility for children of unmarried British fathers, adopted children and children with historical links to British territories. We assess each case individually.
How Passportia Works
Our core service can be broken down into two phases: Eligibility Check and Application Process.
Eligibility Check
You provide details of your ancestry, residence and family history. We review your information and prepare a written eligibility report, usually within 5 working days. If you qualify, we send a fixed-price quotation outlining the next steps in applying for your British nationality.
Application Process
If eligible to proceed, you’ll work with our British nationality caseworkers to prepare your application. We provide a personalised checklist, guide you in gathering documents and prepare the supporting representations. We’re with you every step of the application process, overseeing the submission to The Home Office and keeping you updated until a decision is made. Successful applicants then receive their citizenship certificate and/or their British passport.
