What is the Standard Visitor Visa?

The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows individuals to travel to the United Kingdom for short-term purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family, or short courses.

Most visitors can stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit, although long-term visas (2, 5, or 10 years) may be granted for frequent travellers.

This route is governed by Appendix V: Visitor of the Immigration Rules and is assessed primarily on whether the applicant is a genuine visitor.

Who Needs a UK Visitor Visa?

Your requirement depends on your nationality:

  • Visa nationals must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa before travelling
  • Non-visa nationals may:
    Enter without a visa, or
Require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel
  • Irish citizens are exempt from UK immigration control

Understanding the correct route is critical as applying under the wrong category can lead to refusal or denied entry.

Permitted Activities

  • You can visit the UK for:
    • Tourism and holidays
    • Visiting family or friends
    • Business meetings or conferences
    • Short-term study (up to 6 months)
    • Certain paid engagements (limited circumstances)
  • You cannot:
    • Work (paid or unpaid for a UK company)
    • Access public funds
    • Live in the UK through frequent visits

Eligibility Requirements

To succeed, applicants must demonstrate they are a genuine visitor. This means showing:

  • Intention to leave the UK at the end of the visit
  • Sufficient funds to cover the trip
  • No intention to work or reside in the UK
  • A clear and lawful purpose of visit

Processing Times

  • Standard processing:
    ~3 weeks
  • Priority services may be available
  • Delays may occur if:
    • Documents are incomplete
    • Additional checks are required

Common Reasons for Refusal

Most refusals are based on credibility concerns, not eligibility.

Key risks include:

  • Insufficient or inconsistent financial evidence
  • Weak ties to home country
  • Unclear purpose of visit
  • Contradictions in application

What Happens if Your Visa is Refused?

  • No full right of appeal in most cases
  • You can submit a fresh application
  • Must address refusal reasons directly
  • Legal intervention may be appropriate in complex or repeated refusals.
