Do You Have a Standard or Complex Claim?

Your path to dual nationality depends on your personal circumstances and family history. Many people have a complex claim they don't know about — and Passportia specialises in uncovering exactly those cases.

Standard Claims

Usually straightforward — mainly about documents and evidence

  •  You were born in the UK before 1983 (and your father had no consular connection)
  • Your father was born in the UK before 1983 (and your parents were married)
  • You were born in the UK after 1982 to a British citizen parent or settled resident
  • Your father was granted UK citizenship before your birth and your parents were married

🧩

Complex Claims — Our Speciality

Passportia excels in navigating complex, multi-generational ancestry claims

  • You or a parent held (or once held) a British Passport
  • Birth, adoption, or residence in a former British territory or colony
  • Born in a former British territory to a parent born elsewhere or to unmarried parents
  • Was a Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies (CUKC) or British Protected Person
  • Marriage to a male UK citizen before 1983
  • Independence provisions of former British territories affected your status

Not sure which applies to you?

Our specialists review your family history at no charge and advise on your best route.

Free Eligibility Check

You may already be British

Many people are British citizens by birth — even if they've never held a British passport and have never set foot in the UK. Your citizenship could pass through parents and grandparents going back generations.

  • British nationals can live and work anywhere in the UK — without a visa
  • A British passport gives you access to 185+ countries visa-free
  • You keep your current nationality — no need to choose
  • You could be British from birth — even without knowing it

What is a Citizenship Report?

For complex claims, we prepare a detailed legal opinion: a thorough examination of your family history, historical documents, and nationality law. If the report is positive, we then guide you through the full application.

Also known as a 'Status Trace', this is the gold-standard assessment for complex ancestry claims.

UK Dual Citizenship Law

What the Law Allows — and What to Watch For

UK law generally permits dual citizenship, but there are important exceptions that can affect your existing nationality. Passportia advises on all of these.

  • General Rule: Dual Nationality Permitted
British citizens may hold a second nationality. US, Australian, Canadian, South African, and New Zealand citizens may generally retain their citizenship on acquiring British nationality (subject to their own country's laws).
  • British Subjects & Protected Persons
A British subject or British protected person will lose that status on acquiring another citizenship. This is a narrow category affecting relatively few people.
  • Overseas Citizens & Special Categories
British Overseas citizens, British National (Overseas), and certain British Overseas Territories citizens may permanently lose eligibility if they acquire another citizenship before registering as a full British citizen.
  • Deprivation Risk
Any British national who holds or acquires a second citizenship is, in certain circumstances, potentially more susceptible to citizenship deprivation proceedings. This is a complex, evolving area of law — expert advice matters.

This morning Julian and I attended the British Consulate in Sydney and became British citizens — thank you so much for all your help. We could never have worked our way through the mire to do it ourselves. You and your company were a God-send!
